libtheora 1.1alpha2

いつの間にか、Ogg Theoraの新バージョンがリリースされてました。何かだいぶリリース期間が短くなってきてますね。良い傾向だ。1つ前のバージョンが3月末にリリースされてますから、だいたい2ヶ月ですか。その前が去年の11月ですからね。まぁこれは1.0と1.1という大きな差がありますから単純な比較にはなりませんけど。

素人の私が言うのも何ですが、今年は例年以上にOgg Theoraの知名度がアップするのは間違い無いのではと思っています。理由としてはいくつかありますが、一番大きいのはHTML 5の存在ですね。それに伴うFirefox3.5のネイティブサポート、それにOPERAのサポートも。まぁこちらはOSSでは無いので、個人的にはあんまり関係ないですが、サポートしないよりはしていた方が良いですしね。

後は最近一番注目しているWebkit系。とりわけGoogle ChromeとChromiumですね。こちらはネイティブサポートは今のところ無く、GStreamer経由らしいですが（GTK/WebKit)。ただ、今年のXiph.OrgのGSoCで以下のプロジェクトがあったので、将来的にはliboggplayのみで再生出来るようになるのかもしれません。以下、抜粋。

Proof of Concept liboggplay (html5 video) support in Chromium Browser

This project would focus on integrating support for liboggplay into chrome. This project would only need to be a proof of concept with the end result being some frames decoded in the browser. We have some direct contacts with people on the Chromium project in Google, but would expect the student mostly to work through the Xiph on Chromium online communities.

まぁまだ「proof of concept」の段階なので、実用性うんぬんを語るレベルではないでしょうが、もしもChromiumというか、WebkitでOgg VorbisとOgg TheoraといったOgg系メディアが単独で再生出来るようになったら、本当にいろいろな場面での活用が増えてくるのではと思っています。例えばゲームとか……。この辺りはまた書こうかと思います。まぁ素人の妄想なんですけどね（笑）。
